Ever had a great idea, or are naturally amazing at something, but stop yourself from marketing or selling it because you think….
“But why would anyone pay me for that??”?
That is the wrong question, and worse, it’s causing you to walk right past your marketable unique genius.
There are three characteristics of unique genius that can trick you into asking that wrong question. You should know what they are, so you stop walking past your unique genius.
1. It’s hard to see marketable benefit of your genius…until you just start doing it.
Often you can’t see the “marketable benefits” of your unique genius it – UNTIL YOU ARE DOING IT. In other words, it’s not obvious to you “why anyone would pay you for it”.
Great example – Bill Cunningham is a guy who rides his bike around downtown New York and takes pictures of regular people and then reports on what they are wearing.
Regular people. Not celebrities, not fashion leaders. Regular people.
That’s what he loves to do. He couldn’t go a day without doing it. That is his unique genius.
At first glance, can you see the marketable benefit to that? Not really, right? But, Bill doesn’t care. He just started doing it.
And you know who loved it? New York Times. They hired him as a journalist/photographer and gave him his own section in the New York Times called “On the Street”.
Know who else loved it? The fashion world. In 2008, Cunningham received the Officier de l’ordre des Arts des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He also received the Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence – awarded by Oscar de la Renta.
Do you think if Bill Cunningham had thought for one second about the “marketability” of riding his bike around taking pictures of regular New Yorkers, and asked himself “who would ever pay for that???” – he would have started doing it?
Luckily, Bill Cunningham did not allow himself to ask this question. He. Just. Started. Doing. It. And his perfect clients found him.
So get out there and do it. The right people will find you.

2. It won’t be “normal” – there aren’t 50 other people out there already doing it.
Unique genius is just that – unique. There aren’t 50 or 500 people out there, paving the way and showing exactly how it’s done.
Do you think Lady Gaga wakes up every morning thinking of a unique idea, and then stops herself by thinking. …”But I can’t do that!! No one else is doing it so it must not be marketable.”
Of course not. The REASON Lady Gaga does things, is that no one else is doing it. That’s the point. That’s what makes her unique. That’s what allows her “perfect clients” to find her.
You are not going to see 500 other people paving the way for you and proving it to you, by doing *exactly* what you plan on doing.
And that’s the point.
You want to set yourself apart, right?? Well get on it!
3. Your genius might completely contradict your industry.
Take Howard Stern, for example. He’s got to have the most politically incorrect, unfiltered, unregulated, mouth ever! And he works in radio, which happens to be one of the most highly regulated industries in terms of what you are allowed to say.
Stern wanted to be in radio since he was 5 years old, so you’d think his approach would be to figure out how to “tone it down” and hide his unfiltered, unregulated mouth, so he could succeed in this highly regulated industry. Anything else would contradict success, right? Wrong.
Instead, he decides that he’s not going to change. Instead, he thinks – I’m going to be who I am and let my genius shine.” The rest is history.
Stern is the most-fined radio host – the (FCC) issued fines totaling $2.5 million for content it considered to be indecent. And….wait for it….Stern has won Billboard’s “Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year” award eight times, and is one of the highest-paid figures in radio after signing a deal with Sirius worth $500 million in 2004. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2012.
